Hold on…will there still be free Veterans Day meals in 2021?

Attention veterans: find out exactly where to get a free meal.

Hold on…will there still be free Veterans Day meals in 2021?

The United States takes time to honor the veterans who worked hard to keep the country and its citizens safe. And why not? Risking your life for the good of many is no easy task.

Thankfully, there are many perks that vets receive. And on Veterans Day, there are plenty of Veterans Day benefits, discounts and freebies especially in restaurants to be enjoyed by our men in uniform, especially the vets.

To know about the different dining offers available for vets, here’s a list of restaurants offering either discounts, freebies, and even free meals.

But aside from knowing where vets can go to on their special day or the available Veterans Day giveaways, it would also help to understand more about Veterans Day.

A closer look at Veterans Day (And How You Can Benefit)

Veterans Day was originally called “Armistice Day”, which started on November 11, 1919, in commemoration of the first anniversary of the end of World War 1.

In 1926, Congress decided to make an annual observance of this commemoration through the passage of a resolution. In 1938, Armistice Day became a national holiday.

Along with Memorial Day, Veterans Day honors all American veterans. The difference is that Veterans Day is more particular on thanking the living veterans who served honorably and courageously during both peacetime and in war.

When is Vets Day?

Veterans Day is celebrated every November 11 of each year in the United States. This date is in commemorations of the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” in 1918, the time and date when World War I officially ended.

It was President Dwight Eisenhower who decided to change the name from Armistice Day to what is now referred to as Veterans Day.
For a time, the commemoration of Veterans Day was celebrated on the fourth Monday in October. This is due to the Uniform Holidays Bill of Congress in 1968 which moved Veterans Day to October. The bill was enacted in 1971. However, President Gerald Ford in 1975 returned Veterans Day to its original date of November 11 in honor of the historical significance of the dates.

The United States is not the only country that celebrates its veterans. France, Australia, Canada, and Great Britain, among others also commemorate the veterans of both World War 1 and World War II during November 11 or near the date. For example, Britain celebrates the Remembrance Sunday every second Sunday of November. Britain and the commonwealth nations also observe two minutes of silence every November 11 at 11 in the morning.

Who is a veteran? Who is qualified for benefits?

Under the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 38, a veteran is someone who has served in either active military, air service or naval and was released or discharged under different conditions other than being dishonorable. This means that any person who has completed a service for any brand of the armed forces can be called a veteran as long as they were not discharged dishonorably.

Why do we honor our veterans?

As mentioned, the United States is not the only country that honors its veterans. Unfortunately, some fail to fully grasp why a country like the US makes a big deal in celebrating the vets as they only know that there is a holiday that celebrates its retired military men.
There are so many reasons why we need to celebrate the brave men of the military who are now retired from service. Here are some of them.

You risked your lives! A meal discount is the least we can do.

Military men on duty put their lives at risk every single day they are on duty. Some of them are assigned to different countries fighting alongside strangers and citizens of other countries. They maintain peace and order or hunt down terrorists to make the world a safer place.
In most cases, the men and women of the military won’t be publicly recognized for their bravery. Their faces and names are not mentioned or shown in the media. Yet despite the absence of public recognition or adulation, these men and women fight hard to keep our world a better place.

You made personal sacrifices

When you head out to either watch the movies or dine in a restaurant with friends and families, think of the armed forces who are unable to do the same. These men and women instead fight alongside their comrades. They go for weeks and months without seeing their families, all in the name of active duty.
It isn’t only the military personnel who are making sacrifices. Their families also suffer for weeks without seeing their loved ones. For example, think of soldiers who fought in war zones like Afghanistan or Iraq. These soldiers must have been lonely without their friends and family around. On the other hand, their loved ones worry about their safety. Sometimes, these families suffer and seek aid after the soldier in the family has been discharged,

We enjoy freedom at your expense. Enjoy a meal at ours.

What’s sad is that many people do not fully understand that they can enjoy their freedom all because of men and women who fight hard to keep the peace. This is probably because we are not in war.

Heading out to the beach or perhaps to the nearest grocery store? The freedom to do so is all thanks to our military people. While we happily go through our normal routine and lives, the soldiers are spending years fighting it out on the battlefield. They come back home with physical and emotional scars, which normal citizens will never fully comprehend.

In the end, Veterans Day or even Memorial Day for that matter is a small gesture compared to all the hardships of our soldiers. And the Veterans free meals Memorial day and other benefits offers can never repay our soldiers for all they’ve done for us.

Proof of service—who is eligible?

There are various ways of honoring and thanking our veterans and even active-duty military. There are Veterans Day free stuff benefits, and discounts. And on Veterans Day, there is plenty of Veterans Day restaurant discounts to thank our vets.

Proof of service types

Most of the establishments require a military identification card to avail of the special offers. Others ask for proof of service. But just how one does prove that they were once in service? Fortunately, there are many ways

The first option is to present discharge paperwork. Active duty military men are provided a DD Form 214 when they leave the service. There’s also the DD Form 215, which is essentially a corrected form version of the DD Form 214. Either of the two can be presented as proof of service.

Military reservists, on the other hand, are given DD Form 256 while those who served in either Air National Guard or National Guard are given NGB Form 22 and the corrected version, NGB Form 22-a. Both forms are enough to prove one’s service.

Military records—am I eligible?

Former military service personnel and their next of kin can obtain copies of their military records from the National Archives by filling up a military records request. Usually, the National Archives is the first place to look for military records.

However, not all records are available. This is especially true for those who served before World War I and for servicemen who just recently left the service.

Records of those who served before World War I would be available at the Record Administration in the Old Military and Civil Records Branch in Washington, DC. Information of recently separated military may not be available since these are kept at the Human Resources or personnel department of the branch of service for five to 10 years before they are transferred to the National Archives.

Unfortunately, a major fire broke out in the Archives in 1973, which destroyed hundreds of thousands of records of veterans. These permanently destroyed records mostly belonged to the Army and Air Force.

Other ways of proving military service—read this!

Fortunately, there are different ways of proving military service aside from military records. The following are some of the accepted proof of service, which can be used to get Veterans Day Freebies 2020 as well as other veteran deals from various establishments.

  • Tax records
  • Payroll records
  • Old military service documents
  • Newspaper clipping
  • Old photos in uniform
  • Written statements from others whom a vet have served with
  • Copies of military decorations or awards

In place of proof of military service, some establishments offering free stuff on Veterans Day also accept old and current identification cards. The following are often used to also validate one’s service in the Armed Forces.

  • Military ID card
  • State Veterans ID card
  • VA ID card for health care
  • Veterans ID
  • Veterans Group Membership Card
  • Veterans Designation on Driver’s License

Many places that give free food to vets along with Veterans Day 2020 freebies also allow veterans to come in their uniform to qualify for the freebie or deals.
